To say that my sides ached from laughter by the end of this hilarious
play is an understatement, the gales of laughter from the audience
rocked the building as one laugh overlapped the next. This was a very
cleverly observed and acted Nativity play by this class of 7-year-olds,
and the director did not miss a trick with words or actions and the
cast performed as a true team in enhancing every last moment of serious,
but hilarious, re-enactment of what could be seen in infant schools
at this season. The quote in the programme that ‘there can be
only one Mary’ sets the scenario, and we find that Angel Gabriel
is put out! Add a Joseph who waves at parent, a king with speech impediment,
another angel with light-up multicoloured wings, a cross innkeeper,
a shepherd who knows a lot, a star with an uncle in NASA and a donkey
with a cardboard head, plus a narrator with words on boards, how can
one select any one actor as the key factor when all were so important.
Loved the carols with the clever two word versions, also with some
explanations of some relationships, friendships, bullying, and mishaps.
But the play managed to run for the parents and audience to enjoy.
And then, after an amazing change, we met the parents of the performers
and understood in part why the children acted as they did! A very
clever twist to finish the story and to complete the actions. An excellent
choice of play offering a comedy role to all in this cast, and highly
suitable at this time of year.
